Our Story
Elysian Drift was founded over forty years ago, when late 70’s progressive rock was still... in the late 70s.
It quickly became "not the 70s anymore"... but this Canadian progressive rock band had no intention of letting that stop them. There's just something about the eclectic, open nature of the music. It yearns for discovery, and yet for intricate planning. It relies on determination of intent while simultaneously rejoicing in happy accident. It seems to be content with the cohabitation of polar opposites: a methodic investigation of sonic elements, and an unexpected drifting from one musical idea to another.
Although each band member, at one time or another, participated in the prevailing small venue 'cover song endeavour', a broad spectrum of influences inspired the Drift to write original music instead, build their own studio workspaces, and remain committed to a creative collaboration that breathes unceasing life into the progressive music genre (... or at least their little corner of it.)
It was a relatively short few years in which all four members actually resided within the same small Ottawa Valley town. For the rest of their collaborative existence, Elysian Drift members have lived in separate towns, cities... countries. Plane flights, long road trips, emails and video calls have done their part to keep the delicately spun creative web in tact. But these were just tools. The real glue is the passion of sharing musical sounds, ideas and expressions.
It's really the same story for so many, isn't it? In your teens you encounter unexplainable sounds from LPs or cassettes. "How do they even make those sounds?", you ponder. Soon you encounter someone within your reach that plays an instrument, and you set out on a journey to acquire your own device of expression. You climb the ladder of quality within your humble means, buying and trading in instruments... maybe buying live sound gear or recording systems (so you don't have to pay somebody else to watch you fumble through your musical growth.) And finally, after patching together your first 10 or so original compositions, you start to make your first album.
And... it's at this juncture that it is almost inevitable that you jump ship in order to deal with your 'real' life. Fortunately for Elysian Drift, the 'four guys' saw their musical efforts as... well, just as real as any other part of their life. Financially viable?... maybe not... but as real as real can be.
The 'Drift' devoted years to honing their compositional and collaboration skills and, to this day, enjoy hearing and working on each other's new music concepts. The release of a four song EP in April of 2019 marks the advent of their 'public' life as a band, but if the powers that be allow it, their second EP (and shortly thereafter, there first LP-length, 8-song album) will soon be released.
And, there's lots more where that came from...
